Boyle River

Ordinary8,102 haPermit: Permitted

Boyle River is an 8,102 ha public hunting block in the St James Conservation Area of north Canterbury. Elevations run from around 540 m on the river flats up to 1,730 m on the tops, with a median of about 1,120 m.

It works as a mix of bush and tops — roughly 41% of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline, so hunters get a true beech-bush-to-tussock progression as they climb out of the valley. About 11% pushes into alpine country above 1,500 m. Dominant slope aspect is south-east, which gives a balance of morning sun on the upper faces and cooler shaded bush below.

The block carries red deer, chamois and wild pig. It's a classic St James-country mix: reds through the beech and river margins, chamois on the tops and bluffs, and the chance of a pig low down.

Access & getting there

Air access is permitted, including helicopters, which opens up the upper basins for hunters who would otherwise face a long walk in from the road. WARO is also permitted on the block.

Two huts serve hunters in Boyle River. Boyle Flat Hut is bookable and has heating, mattresses, a non-flush toilet and tap water (not treated — boil before use). Magdalen Hut is not bookable and has the same heating, mattress, toilet and treated-water setup. Both sit within the St James Conservation Area. A bookable hut on a block this size is unusual, and parties should check availability before relying on Boyle Flat.
