Lake Katherine
Lake Katherine is a 3,510-hectare block in the wider Fiordland country, falling under the Te Anau Hunting Restricted Areas permit area. This is classic Fiordland — wet bush, steep faces and bluffy heads.
Elevations run from about 0 m up to 1,350 m, with a median of 475 m. Almost none of the block sits above the bushline, so this is largely bush country with a few higher faces. The dominant aspect is north-east-facing.
Game on the permit includes red deer, wapiti and chamois. The Fiordland herd is the only wild wapiti in New Zealand and is the trophy species hunters come here for.
