Pomahaka Conservation Area
Pomahaka Conservation Area is a 3,284 ha block in the Central Otago and The Remarkables permit area. Elevations run from 698 m on the lower faces to 1,438 m on the tops, with a median of 1,078 m. Twenty-seven per cent of the country sits above the 1,200 m bushline, with no true alpine ground above 1,500 m.
This is mid-elevation hill country with a mix of bush and tussock-edge ground. The block leans south-east, so the morning sun catches it early and the warmer faces hold animals on the sidles. The country sits below true alpine elevations, so expect rolling tussock and scrub rather than rock and snow.
Game on the permit is red deer. Single-species blocks make for focused planning — Pomahaka is essentially a red deer block in mid-elevation tussock-and-bush country.
