Backcountry Helicopters is a Makarora-based operator that has been running wilderness adventures in the area for over two decades and is part of the family-owned Wanaka Helicopters group. The base sits on State Highway 6 about 45 minutes from Wanaka, on the doorstep of Mt Aspiring National Park and the South Westland Conservation Area.
The core business is hunting and fishing helicopter access for red deer, Himalayan tahr and chamois, ranging from DIY day fly-ins to multi-night spike camps and guided trophy hunts. Popular drop zones include the Hunter, Dingle, Landsborough, Wilkin, Cascade and Young valleys plus Haast ballot blocks. Alongside hunting work the company runs scenic helicopter flights and jet boat combo trips into the Wilkin and Siberia Valley.
